In this spring ice melt later than normally in Southern and Central Finland due to rather cold weather in April. Most lakes became ice-free between May 1‒ May 10. In Lapland many lakes are still covered by ice.
Pike starts to spawn in lakes at the same time when the rest of the ice are melting. After the spawning period pike begins to feed eagerly near the spawning areas. So now it is really good time for anglers to go for pike. In a lucky day a real whopper may suddenly bite the lure.
Spinning for pike in shallow waters will work well until surface waters are getting warmer and warmer. Then pike moves to deeper areas.
