Long fishing season
Fishing is allowed all year round on River Merikarvianjoki. The open-water season from March or April through to the turn of November and December allows fishing in varying conditions. In the winter, you can also try out ice-fishing on the river.
River Merikarvianjoki is restocked with rainbow trout regularly, from the moment the ice has broken up through to late autumn, guaranteeing anglers good odds of making a catch throughout the fishing season. The average size of stocked rainbow trout is around 1.5 kilos, but the river is also restocked with specimens weighing over 5 kilos. Effective flies for rainbow trout include, in particular, leeches in red-and-black or orange-and-red colours. Pupae and larvae and similar smaller flies work in olive green. Other lures that work for rainbow trout include small plugs, spoons, spinners and spinning flies.
Immediately after the ice breaks up, sea trout start their spring migration upriver, continuing through to June. Their second migration starts in late summer and continues until late autumn. In addition to stimulating lures, you can pursue sea trout with natural imitation flies, including dry flies. Effective colour combinations include yellow/black and orange/black.
Salmon generally start migrating upriver at the turn of July and August. The best time to catch salmon is in the autumn. The discharge of the river plays a major role in terms of salmon activity; often the best time is when the flow starts to recede after rising. It’s worth tempting salmon with tube flies and smaller hook flies, whereas the most effective spinning lures include traditional salmon plugs as well as spoons and spinners. Good colour combinations include black, violet, brown, red and yellow, among others.
