The narrow but almost 30-kilometre long Lake Ähtärinjärvi is the second largest lake in South Ostrobothnia. Located in the Suomenselkä watershed area, the lake is the source basin for the waters of the River Kokemäenjoki route, which it has amassed into a body of about 28 metres at its deepest point.
Splendid zander waters
Due to the peat-based soil of the catchment area, the water in Lake Ähtärinjärvi is naturally rich in humus. It’s no wonder that the depths of the lake, characterised by dark waters and varying bottom contours, are home to an exceptionally strong stock of zander, which means that there is no shortage of action for trollers or jig anglers on a summer evening. You can often hear stories about the areas close to Ollikkalansaari Island, located at the mid-point of the lake, being the stage for close encounters with that large brass-flank. Of course, Lake Ähtärinjärvi offers hot spots throughout its length and its narrow sounds, in particular, seem to attract zander.
Although zander is probably the most sought-after species in the lake, schools of sturdy perch or big pike are not conspicuous by their absence either. In particular, sizeable perch seem to have become more common in recent years, as manifested by the contents of the coolers of jig anglers and the bags of catches made during ice-fishing competitions on the lake. Perch spots worth checking out can be found around Toikonsaari and Vääräsärkkä Islands. While trolling for zander in mid-lake waters, you may also get an electrifying surprise from a trout. In bay waters, anglers can also pile up their catches with bream and roach.
Effortless fishing with a combined licence
You can buy a lure-fishing licence covering the entire Lake Ähtärinjärvi, which allows trolling without any rod restrictions. The same licence also covers other major lakes in Ähtäri. There are several boat launch ramps along the shores and there is no shortage of accommodation in the local area either. At the southern end of the lake, you can also find local services available in the town of Ähtäri.
