Closed season for salmonoids ‒ juvenile density increased in River Hiitolanjoki

Closed season for trout and salmon fishing in rivers and brooks begins today on September 1 and will end on November 30. Closed season for landlocked salmon in rivers and brooks already started on August 1. Closed season for whitefish is 1.9.–30.11. on rivers and brooks running to Baltic Sea.

An angler who is violating fishing in restricted areas and fishing during closed seasons or is fishing for prohibited species and keeps the catch will be liable to compensate the value of fish species. For instance on the water systems of Vuoksi and River Hiitolanjoki the sanction concerning fishing and keeping a landlocked salmon with an adipose fin is 7 510 €.

Good spawning results in River Hiitolanjoki

River Hiitolanjoki, running in Southern Karelia, is an important spawning area for landlocked salmon. River is home to Finland’s last remaining stock of original and fully natural landlocked salmon. Three power plants barriers to the upstream movement of migratory fish were removed in last years and three new flowing rapids were created. River Hiitolanjoki runs to Russia to Lake Ladoga.

Now there have been really good results in this years test fishing. In some areas there have been even 400 fry and juvenile salmonids per 100 m² in some test areas. The number has doubled from year 2023. Also brown trout spawn in River Hiitolanjoki along with landlocked salmon.
